AZIENDA AGRICOLA PATEA (PATEA FARM) was founded in 2007 and is located in Brancaleone (RC), within the area renowned for the production of the exclusive Reggio Calabria Bergamot (51 municipalities in the Reggio Calabria region along 140 km of coastline from Villa San Giovanni on the Strait of Messina to Monasterace on the Ionian Sea). The company is part of the "PATEA GROUP" and transforms Reggio Calabria Bergamot into natural juices, essential oil, and other agricultural and cosmetic products. Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) has been grown in the Reggio Calabria region since 1750, and its essential oil, or essence, was known and used in Europe even earlier, especially in royal courts for its perfume. Bergamot essence, in addition to its antiseptic and health-promoting properties, has long been used by perfume producers worldwide as it harmonizes and maintains the bouquet of perfumes, enhancing their fresh, floral notes. In the past, bergamot cultivation reached up to 4,000 hectares. Today, just over 1,500 hectares are cultivated, and the "Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria" PGI designation for the fruit and its derivatives is imminent. The "Bergamotto di Reggio Calabria - Olio essenziale" PDO designation has existed since 2001. Bergamot essence is often used in a "cut" form, meaning it is not pure, as it is offered by processing industries.
