Located on a pleasant hill bordered by the Arbia river to the east and by the Bozzone stream to the west, Montechiaro was one of the small towns of the Masse, to which the Sienese Republic had assigned a podestà since 1271. A century later the lordship had the tower built, which can still be seen near the villa. Very little remains today of the ancient fortified parish that belonged to the canons of the Cathedral since ancient times: “Now, however, if you take a look at Vico D'Arbia that place is no longer in the guise of a Fort; but few houses surround the Church, mostly of modern construction. The fortress of Montechiaro is none other than the aforesaid Villa of the White Lords of Siena, which forms the main ornament of the vicinity. However, glory be to the expert farmers of these two villages, who with industry and with the hand recovered those lands, although barren, from their squalor, and to the owners who lavished the gold on embellishing the surroundings with delightful villas and other ornaments, from to forget those past events, which are now recorded in history."
